Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill reacts to Ncuti Gatwa casting

Whovians will soon wave goodbye to Mandip Gill as her character Yaz Khan is set to depart Doctor Who in a special feature-length episode later this year.

She’s leaving in line with Jodie Whittaker’s exit from the BBC sci-fi show as her incarnation of The Doctor regenerates.

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa was recently announced as Whittaker’s replacement and while chatting exclusively to digital spyGil shared her thoughts on the casting news.

“It’s so exciting!” Gill enthused, noting that Gatwa wasn’t one of the stars most fans were predicting would get the iconic sci-fi role.

The actress confessed she hasn’t seen much of Gatwa’s work but is excited to see what he does in the TARDIS.

Gill insisted she’s confident Gatwa is the “perfect person” to take over as the new version of The Doctor.

“He also seems really excited about doing it and I’ve always found when people come into the show, those that are fans of the show or are so excited to be there and want to hold the sonic [screwdriver] up, it’s always just really refreshing and it’s exactly what that show needs,” she remarked.

The casting news was announced earlier this month, with Gatwa sharing his excitement to helm the next phase of the show.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” Gatwa explained. “A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

“Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show,” he added.
